Chameleon
One of the most spectacular reptiles is undoubtedly the chameleon. With its colour-changing abilities and unique behaviour, it makes for a fascinating animal to observe.
The chameleon requires a tropical rainforest terrarium with high humidity and plenty of plants offering opportunities for climbing.
Like bearded dragons, chameleons should also be kept individually, as they are very territorial.
How do I look after a chameleon?
Terrarium
As a chameleon can easily grow to 40 cm in length, it needs a large terrarium. In my opinion, the floor area isn’t as important as the height. Chameleons like to climb and, in the wild, live in trees. My terrarium is 2 metres high. Of course, the floor area should also be at least 80 x 80 cm or larger.
The terrarium should be between 27 and 30 degrees; one area should be 35 degrees. At night, it can be cooler, around 20 to 22 degrees.
Substrate
I use special terrarium soil designed for rainforest terrariums in my terrarium. You can lay down a relatively thick layer of this.
Plants
Chameleons love dense vegetation. However, care must be taken to ensure that the plants are not poisonous or harmful to the chameleons, as they may occasionally nibble on them. I use ferns and bromeliads, for example. Plants create a natural environment in the terrarium, helping the chameleon to feel at home.
What do chameleons eat?
Chameleons are usually carnivores; for example, I feed mine crickets. These shouldn’t be too big, though. My chameleon also likes to nibble on ferns and eats orchid flowers as well.
Lighting
Chameleons absolutely need a UVA and a UVB lamp. It’s also best to have a ceramic heat lamp. Chameleons need plenty of light too.
Set-up and climate
As mentioned above, chameleons need a rainforest terrarium. This should have a humidity level of 60 to 80 per cent during the day. At night, you can increase this to 90 per cent by misting or using a misting system. I have fitted out my terrarium with branches and plenty of plants. I have stuck natural cork panels to the inner walls so that the moisture is retained for longer. It also provides a good surface for the chameleon to climb on.
