Leopard geckos
Leopard geckos are also very interesting animals to observe, although they are more nocturnal. Leopard geckos are also one of the most popular reptiles for terrariums, and are suitable even for beginners. However, although they are easy to keep, they do have certain requirements.
Leopard geckos always seem to be smiling, and they come in a variety of colours and patterns.
How do I look after leopard geckos?
Terrarium
Even though leopard geckos don’t grow very large – around 15 cm – they still need a terrarium that isn’t too small. I have one measuring 1.20 m, in which I keep three geckos: one male and two females. Here, too, I’ve incorporated several levels so that they have more floor space and the terrarium is simply more interesting.
Leopard geckos need a desert-style terrarium. The terrarium should be between 27 and 30 degrees; one area should be 35 degrees. At night, it can be cooler – around 20 to 22 degrees.
Substrate
I’ve used terrarium sand as the substrate. It shouldn’t be too fine, so that the geckos don’t sink into it.
Plants
Similar to the bearded dragon terrarium, I’ve planted the terrarium with Tillandsia and bromeliads. This looks good and creates a natural environment.
What do leopard geckos eat?
Leopard geckos are normally carnivores; for example, I feed them crickets and, occasionally, mealworms. Mine haven’t eaten any plants yet.
Lighting
Leopard geckos are nocturnal. Mine also sleep under the lamps during the day. Whilst UVA and UVB lamps aren’t strictly necessary, I do keep them switched on in the terrarium for a few hours a day.
Set-up and climate
As mentioned above, leopard geckos need a desert-style terrarium. This should have a humidity level of 50 to 60 per cent during the day, i.e. dry air. At night, you can increase the humidity to 70 per cent by giving the terrarium a light spray. I have fitted out my terrarium with branches and plants. When choosing plants, always ensure that they are not harmful to leopard geckos. They do not normally eat plants, but even so, do not put any harmful plants in the terrarium. Plants also help to create a better climate, even in a desert terrarium.
