Light System Diffusion Filter
Here, I’d like to explain to you in very simple terms how a diffusion-filtered system works and how you can easily integrate it into an existing system.
A ‘Diffusion Filter Light’ in an aquarium is a hybrid between a filterless aquarium and a conventional forced-flow filter system. In a forced-flow filter system, the water is completely forced through the filter media, such as the filter sponge.
To achieve diffusion filtration, you don’t need to completely rebuild your filter system; you simply need to modify the filter media. It’s incredibly simple to convert your aquarium to Diffusion Light.
How does it work?
Unlike in a conventional filter system, the filter material – such as the filter sponge in an external filter – is only partially subjected to forced flow. The rest of the water simply flows around the filter sponge.
This is achieved by cutting out sections of the filter sponges or by placing the sponges vertically in the filter, leaving a gap between them.
This ensures that the main filtration is carried out by the substrate, rocks, plants or roots in the aquarium. Even more beneficial bacteria will then colonise these areas. A better result is achieved by reducing the filter’s flow rate. Ideally, the filter should circulate the entire volume of water in the aquarium once an hour.

Less algae
A stable aquarium
Less substrate debris
Aquatic plants grow better
Beautiful fish
All my aquariums have been running much better since then, and the amount of work involved has been significantly reduced. What’s more, the plants are growing so well that I hardly need to fertilise them anymore, and the fish look fantastic too.
I’d also like to point out that when you switch your system to Diffusion Light, it does take a certain amount of time to achieve optimal results, so a bit of patience is required.
My tip:
In my experience, this system works best with a substrate of sand at least 5 cm deep, and good planting.
